Q: Is the Camp only for children who have a delay or a disorder?
A: While the speech and language camp is designed for children who have communication needs or require kindergarten readiness skills, any child age 3-6 would enjoy and benefit from the camp experience. In fact, many of our campers bring their siblings along. Keep in mind that the sibling(s) would pay a reduced rate.

Q: What happens if you don't treat a speech or language problem - will my child just grow out of it?
A: The answer is, not necessarily. Age appropriate language skills are required to learn all other subjects in school, therefore speech and language delays or disorders can inhibit academic performance. Everything children learn is either heard or read. Social, emotional and academic skills can all be negatively affected by communication delays or disorders.
We frequently see children with speech and language difficulties have trouble with self-esteem, social relationships and behaviour. These issues almost always resolve with the resolution of a speech or language problem.
In addition, research suggests that children enrolled in therapy early in their development tend to have better outcomes than children who begin therapy later.

Q:
Do you have a waiting list?
A: Because we have limited enrolment in order to keep our child to adult ratio extremely low, we often have a wait list. If you want to make sure that your child is not on the wait list, we would suggest that you register early. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to get sessions that co-ordinate with your summer vacation schedule. Please feel free to contact us at any time to inquire about the availability of spots.

Q: What if my child is already in therapy with a Speech-Language Pathologist?
A: We will be very happy to discuss your child's goals with his/her therapist and provide continuity of care during the Camp program. Once the goals are co-ordinated, Camp Inukshuk provides a supportive environment for your child to practice their goals individually and then in small group situations.

Q: Do the children spend any time outside?
A: Absolutely! We have access to a safe outdoor playground. We attempt to get outside each day, weather permitting of course. In anticipation of the outside activities, we ask that you apply sun-screen to your child before they arrive at Camp.

Q:
Can the parents stay for the first day?
A: We appreciate your concern, but this is very rarely beneficial. Our staff are highly skilled at minimizing any separation anxiety by integrating the children and helping them to feel comfortable and at ease. The presence of a parent can inhibit this integration process. If you have concerns regarding this issue, please feel free to discuss it with the Camp Director at the time of registration.

Q: Do you offer a whole day program?
A: We do not offer a whole day program at this time. The children are having so much fun that they do not realize how hard they are working on their individualized goals. The program might be overwhelming for children if it were 6 hours in length. Some parents feel that their child would benefit from a whole day program and so we will accommodate this by offering the reduced rate for the additional ½ day. However, we do not provide a lunch. In the past, some parents have enjoyed bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy with their child during the lunch hour.

Q: Should I register my child for more than one week?
A: You will find that your child will benefit more with each successive week. Some of our clients register for all four weeks of speech and language camp or both weeks of reading and writing camp. Each year we have parents comment on how their child can't wait to come back to Camp because they had so much fun. Parents often ask to register for an additional week after their child has attended the first week.

Q: How do I register?
A: All registration information may be found on the registration page.
